Spamdexing and Its Effects

Spamdexing combines spam with keyword indexing in an attempt to trick search engines into listing their websites along with legitimate sites. Search engines use keyword indexing to locate and rank websites. They do this so that you can find websites that interest you rapidly and easily. Spamdexers also mask keywords and phrases by using an assortment of methods such as blending unrelated text into the background colors of web pages. You would not be able see these texts, but the trick can bamboozle the web crawlers that search engines utilize to list and rank sites.

Search engines attempt to take you where you want to go. And they rely on webmasters to create web pages to supply indexing pages. But some web masters abuse the methods that search engines use to rank pages higher by using a variety of tricks. Some webmasters "stuff" keywords hundreds of time on a single webpage in the hopes of appearing more attractive to search engine. Because the keyword appears in great quantities on the page search engines automatically give the web page a higher ranking.

Spamdexing or Black Hat SEO basically works on the concept of exploiting the weaknesses of the search engines. One of the most common techniques of spamdexing is flooding the web page with the keyword(s), mostly displayed in the same colour as the website's background colour. This way the viewer could not see it, but the search engine crawlers could see it and thus rank the page high on the SERP on the basis of keyword occurrence.

Spamdexing is the use of artificial methods to inflate the search engine rankings of a website. One of the current trends in the spamdexing world is cross linking in it's various forms. By allowing comments on a blog site, the blogger was also offering free advertising space to spammers. Not surprisingly the spammers jumped at this opportunity and the bloggers found their comments bombarded with automatically posted, irrelevant spam replies.

In order to spamdex a page, website creators have come up with a lot of techniques to increase their page ranking. One popular way to spamdex is to stuff pages with keywords. This in itself is not a bad thing. In fact, SEOs which are totally legitimate use this technique. However, in spamdexing, the pages themselves do not contain useful information. They are stuffed with so many keywords that oftentimes, the pages do not even make sense at all.

Spamdexing still exists in a variety of forms, but is less effective because of the importance search engines now place on delivering real relevancy. The whole search engine optimization industry has built up on the premise that it is possible to manipulate results in major search engine through a variety of factors. The kings amongst these factors are contents and links, with it being generally accepted that the more of both the better, provided the quality is good.
